“Hmmm, Karin…” Kushina muttered, “Names beginning with K are common in my family. Anyway, why do you look like you’ve seen a ghost? Well, I guess I count as one, sort of.” she said with a snicker.

 

He turned to look at her, “Do you have any direct family?” he asked.

 

Her smile faded, “You’re spoiling the mood.” she said, looking just slightly upset. She was quiet for a few moments, “I… I had a husband, and, a son. My husband and I both, died, just after he was born.” she told him.

 

“When the Kyuubi attacked Konohagakure.” he finished.

 

Kushina froze, and took on a guarded look, “How do you know that?” she asked, an edge to her tone.

 

“Everyone knows the story about how Naruto Uzumaki, the Seventh and current Hokage, was born.” he told her.

 

The guarded expression vanished from Kushina’s face as quickly as it came, and tears welled in her eyes, “Then, he’s alive? My son, my Naruto, is alive?” she asked, her voice full of hope.

 

“And here, on this island, right now. He’s my closest friend.” Sasuke confessed.

 

Kushina grabbed him again, sobbing, but this time they weren’t tears of devastation, but unbridled joy!
