The blast was blinding, and as large as the Demon Dragon itself. Link could feel the pressure wave from the explosion even from the distance that Zelda had flown him away from the monster. Slowly, the young knight resheathed the Master Sword to his back.

 

It was done.

 

Ganondorf, the Demon King, and the scourge that had tormented Hyrule since time immemorial, was at long last dead. Slowly, the skies overhead began to clear, turning from a deep blood crimson red, to a clear and tranquil blue. Link looked down at the Light Dragon on whose head he stood.

 

Zelda.

 

She’d come for him.

 

Somehow, even though she had lost her very sense of self to the Draconification, she came to help Hyrule in its hour of greatest need. A profound sense of sadness threatened to well up within Link. She’d sacrificed everything. Everything she was, her mind, her body, even her future. All of it, gone, for this moment.

 

Was there nothing he could do?

 

Once again, Link felt the weight of his failure to catch her in that chamber deep below Hyrule Castle. He looked at his hand, though it wasn’t the hand that failed to grasp Zelda’s, that hand was gone. This hand, and most of his arm, belonged to the first King of Hyrule, Rauru.

 

And it was glowing!

 

Link felt confused, ‘What?’ he thought. He wasn’t using any of the powers granted to him by Rauru or the sages, but he could feel the power rising in his hand as his palm glowed brighter and brighter. The green light continued to increase until it was even more blinding than the explosion of the Demon King’s dragon body. Link was forced to close his eyes against the glare.

 

Then, just as suddenly as the light came it was gone, and Link found himself somewhere else. It was a place filled with a soft green light, with clouds all around them. He didn’t know where this place was, but something about it felt, sacred. His tunic was gone, leaving him shirtless as he floated above the Light Dragon’s body. She seemed to be asleep as she floated beneath him. Even in this inhuman form, Link could feel a sense of peace in the being who had once been Princess Zelda.

 

A tingling sensation in his hand drew Link’s attention back to it. Again light was pouring out from his hand, then, as though it were being pulled by some unknown force, Link’s hand reached down towards the Light Dragon’s sleeping form. Link could feel something pulling out of him through his hand and pouring into the Light Dragon. As the light in his arm grew brighter, Link felt not one, but two more presences to either side of him. He turned to his left to see the spectral figure of King Rauru materialize there next to him. He appeared as he did on the Great Sky Island, an ethereal being that he could see straight through. Seeing him like this reminded Link again of his encounter with King Rhoam and the fallen Champions from after the Calamity.

 

When Link looked to his right, he saw a second ghostly figure. It was a beautiful woman with tanned skin and long blonde hair. Link recognized her instantly from the visions given to him from the Light Dragon’s tears.

 

Queen Sonia.

 

Neither figure spoke. They only looked down at Zelda like a pair of proud parents. The light coming from Link’s hand intensified, becoming a beam of light that poured down into the Light Dragon where it seemed to be absorbed into her body. The light only seemed to get brighter and brighter as the energies he felt coming from Queen Sonia, King Rauru, and himself grew stronger.

 

Then, with a gentle flash, the Light Dragon’s body dissolved in a shower of glowing motes of energy.

 

As those bits of light fell away, Princess Zelda could be seen floating there! She was wearing the same gown Link had seen in the memories left by the Light Dragon. Rauru’s eyes seemed to say the same before he turned to look at his Queen and held his hand out to her. She smiled at her King and placed her hand in his as the two of them began floating away, their bodies vanishing slowly into the green clouds around them. The two took one final look at Link as they vanished and the clouds began closing in around Link.

 

Slowly, Link closed his eyes, ‘Thank you,’ he thought to the first King and Queen of Hyrule as he silently prayed for them to finally be able to rest in peace. He felt a strong wind at his back as the world around him grew brighter once more.

 

When Link opened his eyes again, he was falling! He was high in the skies of Hyrule, descending rapidly towards the ground. He looked around, he was falling headfirst, and when he looked ‘up’ he gasped with shock. Far below him, Princess Zelda was also falling! She was still unconscious, and had know idea of the danger she was in!

 

Link didn’t hesitate, as he began putting his body into a steep dive to minimize the wind resistance. All of the things Tulin had told him about flying when they made their way up to the Wind Temple played over in his brain. He squinted against the wind as it pulled at his face, shifting his body slightly to keep himself oriented towards Zelda. Her body was still glowing softly, making it easier for him to find her as she fell through a massive cloud.

 

Holding his diving position, Link ignored the pain of his eyes being dried by the winds as he dived to Zelda. ‘Come on!’ he berated himself, ‘Faster! I need to go faster!’ His mind flashed back to that moment in the Imprisoning Chamber, when Zelda fell away from him, and he failed to catch her.

 

He could not fail this time. He would NOT fail this time!

 

Slowly, but surely, the distance between himself and the Princess closed. The clouds around them seemed to part and Link could see the vast fields of Hyrule below. He had to hurry and he willed himself to fall faster! A few moments later she seemed confused again, “But how am I…?” she asked, but trailed off again as she moved to stand up slowly. Her legs were slightly unsteady at first, but grew more stable as she got up fully.

 

“No. I understand.” she said as she seemed to realize something. She turned to look up at Hyrule Castle off in the distance. “I had been sleeping all this time.” she told him.

 

“But when I felt something…like a warm, loving embrace, I woke up.” she told him.
